A few posts back, I wrote on a type of footwear. Today marks the stop #2 on the vertical ride of fashion/anatomy: legwear! Will there be a post on the evolution of bras or trends in eyebrows one day...stay tuned?

Refinery 29 today talks about the new trend they are seeing in leg covering/heating, and I noticed the word "spats" for the first time in a long while. In Japan, the legwear known as leggings (or meggings) nowadays used to be called spats. Naturally I am not the only person who has wondered about the difference, and the Google search "leggings, spats, difference (in Japanese)" turns up quite a few hits. According to this online leggings shop, the two are refer to the exact same thing and and the shift took place around 2004. So Japanese spats=leggings, Q.E.D.

So non-Japanese spats≠leggings, paradoxically Q.E.D. According to the ever-faithful Wiki (and yes, it turns out they are footwear, not legwear), spats have quite the military/uniform/Michael Jackson association, so I am going to end this post with a personal picture of the Indian Army at the Wagah (Indian/Pakistani) border and the Indian Thriller video.
